How do I get a CDL?
To start CDL training, you’ll need a few basic documents:
✅ Proof of legal status in the U.S. — such as:
• U.S. Citizenship
• Green Card
• Work Permit or Work Visa
(All must be valid and not expired.)
✅ Valid U.S. Driver’s License (Class C)
✅ DOT Medical Card (from a certified medical examiner)
✅ Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) — from any U.S. state
Once you have these documents, you can begin training at our school. We’ll guide you through everything — from theory to hands-on driving — so you’re fully prepared for the CDL road test.
After you pass the exam, your results go straight into the federal system — and you’ll receive your CDL in the mail within 10–14 business days.
📌 Note: In some states, you’ll need to pick it up in person at the DMV.
What should you expect from CDL training?
At StartCDL, your training is hands-on, step-by-step and built for beginners.
Here’s what you’ll go through:
1. Permit Preparation. We help you get ready for your CDL permit test with free online practice tests and full question sets in your student account.
2. Pre-Trip Inspection. You’ll learn how to inspect your truck, trailer, lights and brakes — just like on the real exam.
3. Skills Practice on the Yard. We teach you all the required parking and backing maneuvers — with plenty of time to practice until you feel confident.
4. Road Driving. We train you to drive safely in real traffic, city streets and highway conditions — with an instructor by your side.
5. Pre-Test Evaluation. Before your real exam, we run a mock test to make sure you’re 100% ready.
6. CDL Exam. Take your official road test — the final step toward earning your CDL.
What should I choose: automatic or manual transmission?
You can train on either automatic or manual — it depends on your goals and preferences. Here’s what to consider:
Automatic Transmission:
• Easier to learn, especially for beginners
• Faster training process
• Most modern trucking companies use automatic trucks
• Your CDL will include an “automatic only” restriction
Manual Transmission:
• Takes more time and practice to master
• No restriction on your CDL — you’ll be allowed to drive both manual and automatic trucks
• Good option if you plan to work for companies or industries that still use manualStill not sure which is best for you?
