Your commercial driver’s license with an “E” restriction limits you to specific truck types which affects your employment chances. The good news is that this restriction is relatively easy to remove once you understand what it means and what steps to take.

You can easily get rid of E restriction on CDL after completing our E-restriction Removal Course

What Does the “E” Restriction Mean?

A CDL “E” restriction prevents drivers from operating any vehicle except those with automatic transmission systems. In other words, you are not permitted to drive trucks with manual gearboxes.

This limitation can become an issue because many employers – especially those with older fleets or specialized vehicles—still require drivers who can handle manual transmission trucks.

How Do Drivers End Up With This Restriction?

The “E” restriction gets applied when a driver takes their CDL skills test using a truck equipped with an automatic transmission The restriction gets added to your record because you failed to demonstrate your manual driving skills during the official test despite your existing knowledge of manual vehicle operation. The federal guidelines require drivers to take tests which assess their ability to operate equipment they are certified to use.

Steps to Remove the E Restriction

The process to lift the restriction appears simple yet requires specific proof to demonstrate your ability to handle manual transmission vehicles safely.

Step 1: Practice Driving a Manual Truck The process of learning how to operate a manual commercial vehicle requires you to gain knowledge about shifting gears and vehicle control because you lack existing experience. Driving a manual truck requires more advanced skills than driving a manual car therefore drivers must practice correctly to develop their skills.

Step 2: Retake the CDL Skills Test You must schedule and successfully complete the CDL road test again this time using a manual transmission truck. You need to show complete vehicle control during the test by demonstrating your ability to shift gears and manage the vehicle.

Step 3: Update Your License After completing the test you should reach out to your local DMV or licensing authority to request your CDL reissue without the “E” restriction.

Do You Need to Repeat CDL Training?

The complete training program together with its written tests do not require repetition for most people.

To remove the restriction, you typically only need to pass the driving portion of the test in a manual vehicle.

The best way to gain experience for beginners is to complete a short training program together with practice time with a certified CDL holder.
