When to Renew Your Pennsylvania Driver’s License

A standard driver’s license in Pennsylvania is valid for 4 years from the date it was issued; it expires on the day after your birthday.  A two-year renewal option exists for drivers 65 years of age and older. You will receive a renewal notice via email roughly 3 months before the expiration date.  Nonetheless, regardless of receiving this notice, it is your legal responsibility to maintain an active, valid license.

Pennsylvania Driver’s License Renewal Options

Online Renewal

  • If you are eligible, renewing online is the fastest and easiest way.
  • From the PennDOT website: Use driver’s license services.
  • You’ll need:
    1. Your driver’s license number.
    2. The last four digits of your Social Security number.
    3. A valid credit or debit card for payment.

  • Once completed, PennDOT will mail your updated license to your address within 7–15 business days.

Renew In Person

  • For drivers who prefer face-to-face service or need to update their photo, visit a PennDOT Driver License Center.
  • Bring the following:
    1. Your current driver’s license.
    2. An acceptable form of ID if your license is expired or lost.
    3. Payment for the renewal fee (cash, check, money order, or credit card).

  • Your photo will be taken at the center, and you’ll receive a temporary paper license until the permanent one arrives.

Renew by Mail

  • If a mail-in option is provided within the renewal notice, then complete the form as instructed. Attach a check or money order to cover the fee and mail it in .
  • This option is mainly suitable for those who cannot renew online and cannot physically go to a center.

REAL ID Upgrade

  • If you want to upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license during your renewal, then you have to appear in person at a PennDOT center with the following required documents:

1. Proof of identity (such as a passport or birth certificate).
2. Social Security card.
3. Two proofs of Pennsylvania residency, such as utility bills or bank statements.

  • The REAL ID upgrade is an added one-time fee.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
